Acer Aspire 5542G – the exterior, build and design:

The Acer 5542G like any other laptop that sports a wide screen display looks way wider than it’s height, in dimensions. The Acer 5542G sports a nice clam shell design (see the photo) and has a very glossy finish on it’s lid. The lid comes with a bluish metallic tint that looks quite classy, though the lid is prone to finger prints due to it’s glossy finish.

The body of Acer Aspire 5542G is all plastic; but feels quite sturdy when you hold it in your hands. The sides and bottom are made of black colored plastic whereas the palm rest, track pad and the region near it are made of plastic that has the texture and color of galvanized steel. Overall the Acer Aspire 5542G's body looks quite classy and sturdy even though your colleagues’ envy is not guaranteed.

The front edge of the Acer 5542G is thankfully free from any ports, that allows you to keep the laptop close to your body when you keep it on your lap. The front side has a 5-in-one memory card reader near the left side, that supports a wide array of memory card types including SD™, MMC, MS, MS PRO, and xD. It also comes with a dummy insert that helps to prevent dust accumulating inside when not in use.  The memory card reader is a very useful feature that helps you swap in cards from your digital cam and the like, without the hassles of a data cable.

The centre region of the Acer Aspire 5542G's front side has the lid opening tab that when moved horizontally releases the lid’s lock.

The left and right sides of the Acer Aspire 5542G houses an array of ports. The left side starts with the audio jacks – headphone, microphone and line-in. It also supports SP-DIF output, if you have a speaker system that supports digital in.

Next comes two USB 2.0 ports on the left side (comes with a total 4 USB ports, two on the left and two on the right). They are well positioned though it seems like it needed a little too much force to plug in the USB connectors. Adjacent to the USB connectors lies the external VGA output that you can use to connect an external monitor.

Next comes the HDMI port that you can use to view high definition content. The Ethernet/LAN (RJ-45) port lies next to it, followed by the power adapter’s jack in the Acer Aspire 5542G.
