In this page, we will learn about the Maya's essential animation editor - the Graph Editor
Getting to know the Graph Editor in Maya
maya key frame animation graph editor

The Graph Editor in Maya is the one stop solution for fine tuning our ball animation. Let's take a good look at the Graph Editor. The Graph Editor in Maya is shown in the image above. On the Left pane, you can see the currently selected object in the scene (Ball) and it's various attributes that can be animated. The center of the Graph Editor window in Maya (the gray colored region) is the main work area. Here you can see curves in various colors. The colors of the curves correspond to the attributes on the left pane. If you select a specific attribute from the left pane, only that specific attribute's curve gets displayed in the Maya Graph Editor. A vertical red line (near the mouse pointer in the image) shows the current frame which is active in the scene and you can see the frame numbers along the bottom of the Graph Editor in Maya. You have a horizontal set of curve modifier tools along the top region. We will see some of them in detail later.

You can use the same Alt key - Mouse combinations to Zoom and Pan inside the work area in the Graph Editor in Maya. (Alt + Right-Mouse-Button for Zooming and Alt + Center-Mouse-Button/Scroll Wheel for Panning). Try them right away.

In our ball animation in Maya, movement occurs only along the Translate Y (downward bouncing action) and Translate X (forward movement). Since we need to fine tune the bounce action, select the 'Translate Y' from the left pane. You will see the green colored curve with a slight smooth bend at the middle.

You can see three key frames shown in Maya as three small black squares at the beginning, middle and end of the curve.

The culprit here in our ball floating instead of bouncing in Maya, is the animation curve being smooth at the center, instead of being sharp. Hmm.. we have a little work to make that change.

Breaking the Tangents of the Middle key frame to create Bounce Effect in Maya

Click on the middle vertex in the curve (representing the key frame at the 50th frame). A zoomed-in image of the middle vertex selected (yellow colored) is shown in the image to the right. You can see brown colored tangents extending from the selected vertex in Maya. The tangents have small square end points (see the image) that allows to control the curve's bend in Maya. Just try clicking on one of the tangents' end point

Make sure that the Move Tool is selected in the Maya tool box (from the main-window left pane). Then click and hold down the Middle-Mouse-Button/Scroll Wheel on the end point of a tangent as shown in the figure. Now move the mouse up to tilt the tangent and bend the curve along with it. Now you would have noticed that even though we pulled only one end point of the tangent, the other one moved in the opposite direction (thus dipping the curve down) in Maya. We need to break this behavior - Let's break the tangent in Maya.

Undo what you have done and bring the curve back to it's initial form in Maya. Click on the center vertex (key frame) again to select it. Now click on the 'Break Tangents' button maya graph editor break tangents from the top panel inside the Graph Editor in Maya. This breaks the tangents so that they won't be joined any more. Now if you try to move the tangent end point in Maya, the other tangent will remain intact.

We will discuss how to make the ball really bounce in Maya by editing the curve in the next page
