In this page, we will place the key frames for the most critical positions of the ball during the ball bouncing animation sequence.
Setting the key frame in Maya

In the 'Front' panel in Maya, move the ball to the position shown in the image. This position will be the starting position of the ball when the animation begins. Hence we are going to set a key frame for this ball position at the 1st frame. Click on the left most end of the time-line to jump to Frame-1 or press the 'Go to start of Playback range' button (left most among the playback controls) in Maya

The ball having been properly aligned, we are going to set a key frame in Maya. Make sure that the ball is selected in the scene. Press the 's' key from the keyboard (ensure lowercase). This will create a key frame for the ball at frame 1 (since frame 1 is active in the time line). This key frame contains the ball's position and other critical attributes at the time of that key frame creation. Since the key frame is now positioned at frame 1, the ball will retain that key frame specific attributes in that frame.

Note: Key frames will be set in Maya only for those objects that are selected while you press the key 's' on the keyboard. It means that when we selected the ball and pressed the 's' key, only the ball's position and other attributes got stored. The table, vase and other objects in the scene won't have any attributes stored in that key frame unless you had selected those objects too, when you had set the key frame in Maya.

You have an alternate way to set key frames in Maya. With the Animation menu-set selected, choose Animate > Set Key. But obviously pressing the 's' key is easier. Right?

Now click on the time line at the position that reads '50', which will move the current frame to 50. At exactly half the animation time (50th frame) we want the ball to hit the table's top surface. So we need to set a key frame at that frame in Maya. Move the ball to a position as shown in the image (make sure that the ball hits almost near the center of the table. Also take a look at the persp panel in Maya to check the position of the ball along the other axes too).

Now press the 's' key to set a key frame of the ball's position at the 50th frame. You will notice the key frame indicator (vertical red line) in Maya in the time-line at the current frame's position.

Easy job right... setting key frames in Maya? Well, we'll set one more for the final frame - the 100th one. Click on the time line at the 100th frame to jump to that frame in Maya. Move the ball to the position shown in the image and press the 's' key. This will fix the ball's position at the last frame in Maya.

Now try playing the whole animation in Maya, by clicking on the Play button from the play back animation controls. Oops.. the ball floats instead of bouncing right? Hmm.. we will work on that in the next page.
