You will get a good clutch on texturing in Maya in this page.
Tuning the Material's attributes in Maya:
Once you have assigned the cloth texture to the Color channel in Maya, you will see that the material's other attributes are gone and the cloth texture's attributes have filled up the attribute editor in Maya.

I'll show you how to switch back to the parent parameters in Maya. Click on the button on which the mouse pointer rests in the image. It will take you to the material's base attributes in Maya.

Now we need to come back to the cloth texture's specific parameters. If you look at the Color channel in Maya, you can see that the button that had the checker symbol has changed showing that it contains a texture. Click on that button (above which the mouse pointer rests in the image)

You would have got back to the cloth texture's attributes in Maya.

But if you look at the persp view now, you would notice that your table-sheet appears to be gray again. It doesn't seem to have the texture applied on it. Well, it has the texture on it, but the problem is that your persp panel doesn't support displaying the texture in it. It's easy to solve. In the persp panel's menu in Maya (not the main menu bar), choose Shading > Hardware Texturing if it doesn't have a check box on it. Now hardware texturing has been enabled in your persp panel in Maya and you should be able to see the cloth texture on the table sheet object.

But if you look closer, you will see that the texture looks so big that a couple of white and black patches cover up the whole table sheet in Maya. We need to make the texture repeat more often.

In the attribute editor of the cloth texture, you will see a tab beside it on the top, titled 'place2dTexture1' maya texture place2dtexture. Click on it, to switch to that tab in Maya. Change the Repeat UV parameters as shown maya texture repeatuv. Now the texture of the sheet should have got a more scaled down look. The RepeatUV parameter in Maya will repeat the texture along the length and width as many number of times as you specify in it. Now we have specified that we want the texture to be repeated 40 times along the width and 80 times along the length.

Moving into and out of input / output connections in Maya

As we have seen earlier, we can move back to the parent node in the attribute editor (e.g.: from the Cloth texture to the Parent Material attributes) by clicking on the 'Go to Output Connection' button maya output connection . Similarly if you want to go deep into a node (e.g.: from the cloth texture to the place2dtexture, where the latter defines how the cloth texture needs to be placed), just click on the 'Go to Input Connection' button maya input connection in Maya. Try a couple of times clicking both these buttons and where it takes you.

Now that we have created a good pattern of cloth on the table sheet, let's color it in Maya. Go to the Cloth texture again in the Attribute Editor (Forgot? Click on the maya input connection beside the 'Color' channel). In the cloth texture you will notice two colored boxes reading 'U Color' and 'V Color'. These colors determines what colors the white and black patches in the cloth takes in Maya. Click inside the colored boxes and change the colors as shown in the image.
