In this chapter, we will add more colors and light to our scene in Maya. Yes.. we are going to apply shading and lighting and render to see the results. Let's begin.
Shading / Texturing the table-vase scene in Maya:

Open the scene 'chap-02-save-table-vase-scene' and choose File > Save Scene As from the menu and save the scene as "chap-03-table-vase-scene-textured".

Let's get our first object textured in Maya. We will start with the table sheet. Select the table sheet object and right click on it (don't release the click) and from the menu that appears, without releasing the mouse button, drag your mouse over 'Assign New Material'. A sub menu appears. Still holding down the mouse button, drag the mouse over 'Blinn' inside the sub menu and release the mouse, as shown in the image.

If you are facing difficulty in selecting an item from the child menu in Maya

It can be a little tricky process; so do it a little slow and careful in the beginning, or the child menus will disappear before you are able to move your mouse over it in Maya. If the sub menu disappears before you are able to move the mouse over it, here is what you need to do: With the mouse button down and you having moved the the mouse over 'Assign New Material' you would have got the child menu. Now, move the mouse towards the right, perfectly parallel to the 'Assign New Material' item in Maya. If you move the mouse out of it, the child menu will disappear. Move the mouse parallel till your mouse is inside the child menu. Now you can move the mouse up and choose the 'Blinn' easily in Maya.

Once you add a new material in Maya, you will get the material's attributes in the attribute editor as shown in the figure. The material's attributes can be edited to make it the way you want.

If you click somewhere else in the scene, this material may vanish from the attribute editor in Maya. In that case, just select the table sheet on which you applied the material and click the Show / Hide Attribute editor button maya show hide attribute editor. (if the attribute editor is not visible)

This will bring the attribute editor again in Maya. But the material may not be immediately visible. But you will see a tab in the attribute editor reading 'blinn1'. Clicking on it will bring up the material that belongs to the Table sheet object in Maya.
Something you need to know about Shading and Materials in Maya

Well, its time for some theory I guess. So far we have talked about how to assign a material to an object in Maya. But why do we use a material? Well.. a material is a set of parameters that determines the nature of how an object looks in Maya. If you assign the material to an object in Maya, the object will also receive those attributes in it's looks. For example when you create a blinn material and assign it to our sheet, the sheet receives a little more glossy look (that we will change later). Imagine it as if you are wrapping the object with that material.

You can create a material and assign it to any number of objects in Maya. When you change the material's properties through the attribute editor, all the objects will reflect the same change. By default Maya assigns a material called Lambert (a very dull looking material) to all the objects you create in Maya. That is the reason why all the objects you created so far had that dull gray look.

This whole process of applying the materials, and applying textures (patterns or external images) and thus tuning the look of an object is referred to as Shading in Maya.

Well that's just the beginning. Let's turn you into an expert in Shading in Maya. Just flip to the next page
