We will create a simple vase in this page..
Creating a Vase using the Revolve tool in Maya:

The technique that you are going to learn is a very useful one that you will find extremely handy at times in Maya. The technique is very simple. We will draw the profile shape of the vase using the curve tool and then Revolve it to obtain the vase object.

Drawing the Vessel's profile using the CV Curve Tool
Switch to the front panel and maximize it. This orthographic view will be more suitable for drawing the profile of the vase. In Maya, we have a couple of Curve tools out of which CV curve tool is a very good choice for drawing simple shapes. The CV curve tool has control vertices that you can use to alter it's shape any time you wish.

From the main menu, choose Create > CV Curve Tool. Now click to create three points from top to bottom as shown in the image. The third click should be the bottom-most, so that the curve direction flows from top to the bottom

Now click on the fourth point as shown in the figure. Once you click the fourth point, a curve connecting all these points will appear in Maya.

Please note that you need not worry about the exact position where you place the vertices / control points. We can edit those vertices any time we need in Maya. If suppose you placed a point totally out of place, pressing Backspace key will remove it, and you can click again to redefine it's position in the scene, without disrupting the curve.

In this figure, you can see the full profile curve of the vase. You continue creating the points of the curve as shown in the figure. Once you reach the bottom most vertex (highlighted in yellow), press Enter, which will complete the curve tool in Maya.

We are going to revolve the curve in Maya so that we get a beautiful vase out of it. Imagine revolving as holding the curve at it's bottom most point and rotating it 360 degrees, which gives you the full surface outline of the vase. Not clear yet? Don't worry.. I'll show you.

Applying Revolve and modifying the profile shape in Maya

Change the menu set to 'Surfaces' (from the drop-down at the top left corner under the menu bar). This will display the Surfaces menu in Maya. Now click on the profile curve to select it and choose Surfaces > Revolve from the menu in Maya. Voila, we got our vase. Just as I mentioned above, the profile shape got revolved to create the vase's surface. Terrific. No?

I know what you are thinking.. Well, if the vase could have been little more slim.... Yes exactly.. We will do that next.

Select the Profile curve (Not the vase surface. Better use the Outliner and choose 'curve1'). Now right click on it and choose 'Control Vertex' from the menu. You got back the profile curve with all the control vertices in Maya.

Select and move the control vertices so that you change the profile shape to something similar (need not be exact) to what is shown in the figure. See how the profile's shape change affects the surface too in Maya.

Once you are done modifying the shape and you are happy with the vase's shape, select the profile curve and delete it in Maya. Please note that once you delete the profile curve, and later you decide that you want to tweak the vase profile shape, things will turn difficult. So delete the profile only once you are done modeling that object completely.

Done modeling the Vase. Chapter over? Not yet... We will learn something critical regarding pivot points, mesh combining and positioning the scene objects in Maya in the next page
