In this page, we will see how we can apply a lattice deformer to the table sheet using Maya.
Making the table's sheet a little wavy in Maya - Using Lattice:
Let's make the sheet look a little wavy at one corner so that it will look more realistic. It is very simple to do in Maya. Select the table sheet object in Maya. Make sure that the menu set is in 'Animation' maya menu set animation, so that you will have the 'Deform' menu item present in the menu bar. Select Deform > Create Lattice from the menu. This will cover the table's sheet object with a lattice as shown in the figure.

Something that you need to know about Lattice in Maya

Lattice is a powerful deformer tool that you can use to deform the shape of any mesh in Maya. The lattice will surround the object on which you apply it. The lattice will have Lattice points, which are the control points that when dragged, deforms the base object's vertices, so that the shape of the base object itself gets deformed. The deformation of the base objects vertices in Maya will be in accordance with, those vertices' distance from the lattice point that we are moving.

Activating the control points (lattice points) can be a little tricky if you are new to Maya. In order to activate the lattice, what you need to do is select the lattice and right click on it (don't release the mouse yet) and choose 'Lattice Point' from the menu that appears. But the basic problem is that since the lattice always surrounds the base object, when you try to select the lattice, in most cases the base object gets selected in Maya. You can overcome this difficulty in selecting the lattice by means of two ways.

Either you need to find a region in the lattice where it doesn't overlap with the base object's surface, so that you can click on it and select it easily in Maya. See the figure to the right in which the mouse pointer shows such a region.

The other option is to use the Outliner. Choose Window > Outliner from the menu bar in Maya. This will pop up the Outliner window. The outliner shows you all the objects in your scene from which you can select them based on their names. Select the lattice by clicking on it's name in the Outliner as shown.

Now let's switch the lattice into 'Lattice Point' mode in Maya. With the lattice selected, right click on any corner point of the lattice or preferably outside the sheet object's area somewhere in the free space of the scene. The reason is that still you have a chance of accidentally selecting the underlying sheet object's context menu instead of the lattice's when you right click in Maya. So preferably do the right click in a free space. Now choose 'Lattice Point' from the menu that appears in Maya.

We will learn more about lattices in Maya in the next page
