In this page, we will see how we can decorate the table with the sheet object we have just now created.
Creating the bends in the table's sheet in Maya:
maya table sheet vertices

In the figure above, you can see two images, of the table and the sheet, from the top-view in Maya. What we need to do is drag the two rows of vertices that belong to the table sheet object outwards so that the second row just crosses the table's edge. Confused? Don't worry.. I'll explain step by step. Right click on the table sheet object in Maya(don't release the mouse button yet) and move the mouse over the Vertex mode. Now release the mouse button. You have turned the table sheet object into vertex editing mode in Maya. In this mode, you can freely select, and transform vertices in Maya as you wish.

Now click and drag the mouse from the top left corner of the table sheet so that the selection covers all the vertices that belongs to the top two rows. You can see those selected vertices (in yellow color) in the figure above (left one). Now, using the Move Tool move these vertices upwards in Maya so that the second row of vertices just crosses the table's top edge (blue edge in the right image above)

Similarly, select the bottom two rows of vertices by dragging a selection box around it using the mouse and move those vertices downwards in the top-view, such that it just crosses the other edge of the table.

You can see in the image how the sheet will look like, after the vertices are moved.

Covering the table sheet over the table top in Maya

Any clue why we moved the two rows of vertices on both sides of the sheet object just crossing the two opposite edges of the table's top in Maya? I will explain it to you. If you look at the previous image (above), you can see that from the two rows of vertices, one row lies just above the table's edge. So if you pull the other row of vertices (along the edge of the sheet) down, it will stay falling down from the table's edge naturally. Got it?

Here goes what you need to do. Select the row of vertices at the edge of the table sheet and move it down in Maya. Also move it inwards (Z axis) so that it falls vertically down as shown in the image.

Now you repeat the same thing on the other side of the sheet in Maya. You can use the other panels to make sure that both the sides of the sheet drops down along the same lengths.

Switch from the component type to object type in Maya by clicking on the Object type button object selection type from the tool bar.

Note: Instead of switching from the vertex mode to the object mode in Maya by clicking on the Object Type button, you have an easier method to do it. When the object is in the Vertex or any other component mode, right click on the object (don't release the click yet). From the menu that pops up, choose 'Select' (Move the mouse over it, with the mouse button still down and then release the button). This selects the object as a whole and switches out from the vertex or other component modes.

Now use the Move tool in Maya to drag the sheet down so that it rests on top of the table-top as shown in the above image.

Great job... We have made a beautiful table and sheet. We will see how to make the make the sheet more realistic in the next page
