We will look into the creation history in Maya and the impact of deformers on it, in this page.
Understanding the Creation / Construction History in Maya:

We noticed that each deformer we add gets stacked in the Channel box, along wih the previous inputs. But why?

This stacked representation of all the inputs, deformers etc is called as the construction History of an object in Maya. It helps us a great deal in manipulating the base object's shape even after having applied ten deformers to that object. The deformers will be re-applied by Maya on top of the changed base object.

In our table leg's case, we have a deformer 'Flare' applied on the base cylinder object. Let's see how the history in Maya helps us in manipulating the base object and get the changes move up through the stack of deformers.

In the channel box in Maya, you can see that 'polyCylinder1' is the bottom most element, since it was the one that was created first. Click on it and change the Subdivisions height value to 2 and press Enter. Immediately you will notice that the Curve of the cylinder which was caused by the 'Flare' deformer also got changed in Maya. The curve became less smooth, since the no: of segments along the height got reduced.

Similarly, you can change any property of the base object in Maya and see it getting reflected through the deformers and items above in the stack. Play around with the values a little and see how the history in Maya helps you in changing things on the fly.

Once you are done with the experimentations, just revert back all the values to what it was before. Also keep the subdivisions height value of the cylinder at 4.

Deleting the history of an object in Maya

We have seen that the history of the table's leg helped us manipulate it's basic construction time parameters even after already making other modifications to the object. But the history in Maya causes a performance issue in your scene if you maintain the history of all the objects and if your scene is a pretty complex one. In our current scene, it won't create any issue. But still, I will show you how to clear the history in Maya.

Select the object, whose history you want to delete (Our table's leg). Go to the main menu and choose Edit > Delete By Type > History. That's it. If you look into the channel box now, you will not find a trace of our selected object's construction history. It's gone.

Note: Once you delete the history of the object in Maya, you cannot alter any of the construction time parameters or other modifiers applied to the objects, so far. Perform the history deletion only when you are sure you no longer need the underlying construction details any more, and that the object is in the perfect shape.
We will duplicate the legs and align them in Maya in the next page
