Creating the Fire in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson

Now that we are ready to set up the fire in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), let's do it. In the create panel, click on the Helpers 3d max helper which is the one to the right of the cameras. Within the helper's category rollout, choose Atmospheric Apparatus instead of Standard. Click on the Sphere Gizmo button. In the top viewport in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) click and drag to create a gizmo in the place where the three wooden sticks meet. The gizmo represents the boundary of the area inside which the fire will be created.

Set the Radius of the gizmo to 50. Click on the Hemisphere checkbox to enable it, so that the gizmo is now a hemisphere instead of a full sphere in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Now move the gizmo in the front and left viewports so that it is positioned exactly where the wooden sticks meet. Scale the gizmo using the non-uniform scale tool along the Y axis in the front or left viewports, so that it's height is increased. See the figures.

We have defined the area inside which we need fire by using the gizmo. Now let's add the fire effect. Click on Rendering > Environment from the menu bar. In the Environment dialog box, within the Atmosphere roll out, click on the Add button. In the dialog box that appears, choose Fire Effect and click OK. This adds a Fire effect to the 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) scene. In the Fire effect parameters in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) click on the Pick Gizmo button. Now move the mouse pointer over the gizmo in the scene and the most pointer will change, signifying picking mode. Click on the gizmo to pick it. Now we have the gizmo's name listed in the fire effects parameters. Render the scene, and you will see fire at the end of the wooden sticks.

Once you render the 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) scene, you will notice that the fire does not look realistic. We need to change a few of the parameters to make it look more real. With the Fire effect selected in the Environment dialog box, within the fire effect parameters in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), change the Flame type as Tendril. Tendril gives narrow and longer fire samples, unlike the fireball in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Change the Flame size to 15. Reducing the flame size increases the number of flame tendrils within the gizmo, and hence the fire looks more realistic. Increase the Density to 25, which makes the fire look brighter. Change the Number of samples to 5 which makes the fire look coarser.

Note: In the fire effect parameters in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), you can change the colour of fire by clicking inside any of the three coloured rectangles, near the top and picking the color from the color chooser that appears.
Modifying the Lighting a bit in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson
Now that we have added fire to the 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) scene, the lighting set up has to be rearranged a bit. Select Omni01 - the light just near the fireplace. In the modify panel, change the Multiplier value to 2. This makes the fireplace dimmer. Now we need to add a new light, which simulates the fluctuations in lighting caused by the fire movement. Add an Omni in the top viewport within the fireplace exactly resting on the tip of the wooden sticks. Make sure that the light is placed properly within the fireplace by looking at all the 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) viewports.

Change the colour of the light to Dark orangish red. Set the Multiplier value as 2. Change Decay Type as Inverse Square, and set the Start value as 100. Also turn on Shadows in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), and choose Shadow Map as the type of shadow.

Render the 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) scene to see how the room really looks with the fireplace in it. We will animate the fire in the next Chapter.
