Rotation & Scaling

Tutorial on Rotating the teapot in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max )
Rotating is very much similar to the move operation in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). The 'Select & Rotate' or the 'Rotate' tool is the one placed next to the Move tool in the Main toolbar. I hope you wont have trouble finding it. Just click on it to activate Rotation on your current selection. Like the Move tool, you can also use the Rotate tool to select objects in the viewports.
Simply move the mousepointer over our teapot which is currently selected (select it if it is not selected) with the Rotate tool activated. The viewport will show the Rotate manipulator originating from the object - teapot.
3ds max tutorial rotate

The rotate manipulator shows as three circles covering the object's center in red, blue and green colours. In the above figure, the circle along which we are rotating appears yellow instead of green, because its the currently selected direction. Moving the mouse over the circle along which we want our object to rotate, highlights the circle with yellow colour. Move the mouse over the highlighted circle in the figure, in your perspective view and click-drag the mouse in the direction shown by the big yellow arrow in the right figure. When you start dragging, the teapot starts rotating. A display of the angle of rotation in the format X,Y,Z shows up in the region shown by the 'green rectangle' in the figure above. This gives you a precise idea about the angle of rotation in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

TIP: You can undo the recent actions by pressing Ctrl + Z key combination
Note: Certain features may not be available in some lower versions of 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ).
Experiment with various directions of rotation. Also try rotating in the orthographic views.
Scaling the teapot in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max )
Scaling is very similar to the previous two transformations. The 'Select & Uniform Scale' tool is found next to the Rotate tool on the Main Toolbar. Click to activate it. 3ds max tutorial scale tool. Now move the mouse over the teapot in the perspective view. Instead of the circle in rotation, you will see a triangle originating from the center of the object, which is the Scale manipulator.

Move your mouse over any of the arrow heads showing direction of scale and click-drag along that direction to scale the teapot along that particular direction. see Fig 1 below. It results in non-uniform scaling. If you prefer uniform scaling, move your mouse near the center of the triangle manipulator and click-drag. see Fig 2. The teapot scales along all the directions uniformally. If you prefer scaling along 'XY', 'XZ' or 'YZ' planes, move the mouse over the triangle's outer edges that connects the corresponding arrow heads. see Fig 3. For example, if you want to scale along XY plane, move the mouse over the manipulator triangle's outer edge connecting the X direction arrow and the Y direction arrow originating from our teapot's center.

All the three modes of scaling are illustrated above. The first figure shows scaling along the direction indicated by the arrow. The second figure shows scaling uniformally by moving the mouse at the center of the triangle and then performing click-drag to scale. The third figure shows scaling along a plane as in XY scaling.

This concludes the 1st chapter of Basics in the tutorial. Congratulations. You have learned alot in such a short span. Seems confused? Don't worry. Keep on experimenting with what you have learned. Don't hesitate to look back to previous pages. Make sure you got comfortable with all the tools and methods. Don't skip forward to the next chapter unless you are sure you have mastered everything that you learned from this level. It is quite natural to get confused with such a powerful software like 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ). I was totally lost when I started to learn it, seven years back. Your confusion will vanish once you practise enough and as you proceed furthur with the training. Never lose hope. Anyway, the effort you put in to learn 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ) will never go unfruitful. You are opening the doors to your imagination. Be confident and proceed.
