Tutorial on Doing transformations in 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX )
Moving in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max )
Lets give some life to our model - 'the teapot'. Lets move it. Moving, rotating and Scaling are the most basic trasformations we can perform on any 3D model in our 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) scene. We access the 'Select & Move' tool from the 'Main Toolbar' located at the top, just below the Menu bar. Remember that we selected the 'Select Object' Tool from the same Toolbar. Please remember the names of these toolbars and panels as later on, I'll be referring to them by their names.

The mouse pointer in the figure points to the 'Select & Move' tool. Simply click on it. The tool gets selected. Now when you move the mouse cursor over any object in the scene, the pointer turns to the 'four way' arrow icon. It signifies that you are in the 'Select & Move' mode. Clicking on any object in the viewport, selects it as you do in the 'Select Object' tool But with the 'Select & Move' tool you can also move the object in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

Moving an object in the viewport is very simple. I will refer to the 'Select & Move' tool as simply move tool. With the move tool activated, click on the object you wish to move in any of the viewports in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). It gets selected. Notice the presence of a 'blue', 'green' and 'red' arrow in the x, y and z directions pointing out from the center of our selected object - the teapot. These arrows are the directions along which we can move the object.
Select the direction for movement by moving your mouse over the required arrow. Please move the mouse over the arrow head, not at the trail. The direction indicating colour changes in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). With the mouse over the desired direction arrow, click and drag your mouse in the perspective viewport. The object moves along with the mouse in that chosen direction.

Notice that the mouse pointer is over the red arrow in the second figure. It shows that the 'x' axis is chosen for movement (see the 'x' marking near the red arrow'). The dragging direction is shown by the big yellow arrow.
Experiment moving in different directions. You can also move the object along a combination of axes. For example you want to move the teapot along the XZ plane, move the mouse near the intersection point of the x arrow (red) and z arrow (blue). A small square shows up near the interection point. Keeping your mouse on that square, Click & drag to move the object along that combined direction. Experiment with moving in various directions in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Also try the move tool in other 'viewports'. Please note that in orthographic views like Left, Front etc, not all axes will be visible for movement. You can move only along a 2D plane (2 axes) in those orthographic views. To learn Rotation and Scaling move to the next page
