Tutorial on Working with the viewports in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max )

The viewports as you have already seen are simple camera like views through which you can observe a scene. A scene may comprise of several models, lights, particles etc in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). By the word Model we refer to a 3D entity – be it a ball, a human figure, a car etc. I hope these terms are clear now.

First of all we need a model to display on the viewport. Your window’s viewports in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) are all blank now. right? Its simply because you haven’t created any models in your scene yet.

Creating a Teapot using Primitive Modeling in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max )
3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ) offers a large no of modeling techniques. One of the most simple modeling technique is Primitive Modeling. By the word Primitive Modeling in this tutorial, we mean that we will be using only primitives to model our required objects. For example if I’m going to model a human using primitive modeling in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) , I’ll create a head using a sphere, neck using a cylinder and so on. Each individual limbs will be created using individual or combined primitives. 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ) offers a number of primitives like Box, Sphere, Cylinder etc. All these primitives and lots of other features in 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ) are available through the ‘Create Panel’. The ‘Create Panel’ is one among a number of tabbed panels present on the right side of the 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ) window.

What you see here is the Create Panel of 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). The blue arrow indicates the position of this panel relative to the main window. Make sure that the Tab is in the position with the first tab active. The first tab is the 'Create panel'. Verify the tab position using the figure:

The tab with the 'Mouse pointer' icon and a highlight at the tip is the 'Create Panel'. You would have noticed another mouse pointer below it. It is the actual mouse pointer pointing at the sub-tab of the 'Create Panel'. This panel is called 'Geometry' Panel. It gives you a set of 3D Primitives. Have a look at the various primitives available - Box, Sphere etc
These primitives are infact “Standard Primitives”. There are several other kinds of Geometry items in the ‘Geometry Panel’ in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). They are accessible through the drop down menu showing ‘Standard Primitives’. Just click on it and choose ‘Extended primitives’. You are now presented with a different set of primitives. Right? Well, we will look into it later in the tutorial. So switch back to the ‘Standard Primitives’.

To create the Teapot in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), click on the button with the text "Teapot" on it. It is located four items below the 'Box' primitive. On clicking it, the button will get depressed and gets highlighted as shown in figure: 3ds max tutorial teapot
Now Left-Click and Drag your mouse on the 'Perspective' viewport. You will notice that as you drag the mouse after clicking and holding on the viewport, the teapot starts to grow. When you drag in the opposite direction, it starts to shrink. Don’t release the mouse until the teapot has attained the required size. Infact you could drag on any of the viewports. But drawing on other viewports might not guarantee the required orientation for the model. The teapot would have got drawn upside down depending on the orthographic viewport you choose. That is the reason why I suggested you to draw on the perspective viewport.
Download the FREE 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) Training Video which demonstrates the creation of objects in 3D Studio MAX here
The download is a RAR file which contains the training video file compressed using MPEG-4 codec. Click here for instructions on viewing the video.
Suppose if you accidently released the mouse before the teapot having attained the required size. Don't worry we have got provisions for changing the size and other attirbutes of the model in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Let's see how to do such exciting things in the next page of this tutorial.
