Hi dear reader, do you remember that we have postponed the modeling of a very significant organ in our female model's body - the ear. Let's model a very basic human ear in this chapter and attach it to our model's mesh in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) . Shall we begin?

Start a fresh scene and save it as chapter12.6-save01.max

Modeling the human ear in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max )

Now that you would have become an expert in surface modeling in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), there is no need to tell you what the first step would be. Yes... Draw the profile of the ear using the Line tool in the Front or Left viewport. Try to create the minimal vertices in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) so that our ear won't get overly complicated.

Turn on 3D snap and connect the vertices using lines as shown in the figure. You will need to refine vertices on these lines so that the crossing line can connect through it.

Refine the vertices required for creating the new curved line as shown in the figure. Create the line through the refined vertices.

Create a Reference copy of the shape and apply the surface modifier on to it in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Also apply a 2-Sided material to it. Don't forget to move the reference figure slightly apart from our spline cage.

Select the vertices, right click and choose Smooth to make the curves smoothed. Move the vertices in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) so that the ear has a more natural look.

character modeling human ear6
Refine a few vertices and connect them to form an intermediate curved line as shown in the figure. This line and the associated vertices will give added control over the shape of our ear model in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

Now let's give depth to our ear model. Move the vertices towards the suitable directions so that our ear model has the required 3rd dimension, curves and bends. Refer the figure to get a good idea about where all you need to give depth and projections to the ear model in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

In order to make the modeling easier, we have not adopted the real complicated structure of the ear fully.

Please don't forget to Save the scene. You will learn how to refine the ear and attach it to the female model's body in the next page of this tutorial.
