In this chapter, we will start modeling the female model / character's arm / hand.

Create a new Scene and save it as chapter-12.3-save-01.max . Now lets start by creating the outline profile of the model / character's arm in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Draw the profile shown to the left in the 'Front' viewport using the Line tool. This is the cross-sectional shape of the model / character's arm, starting at the shoulder. |
One advantage that we have when modeling a hand, is that since it is circular in cross-section, we can simply duplicate the segments and connect them in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).
With the profile selected, go to the Modify Panel in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) and choose the selection to 'Segment' instead of 'Vertex' in the Line's properties below the Modifier list. Now click and drag around the model / character's profile, using the select tool, so that all the segments in the profile gets selected. Now hold down the 'Shift' key and drag the segment along the 'Y' axis in the perspective view in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). This will create a duplicate segment inside within same profile line of the model / character.

With the profile line still in the 'segment' selection mode in the modify panel, select the newly duplicated segment alone and scale it down a little. Now repeat the previous step of duplicating the segment, to create 3 more segments in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).
These five segments define the profile of the model / character's arm from the shoulder to the wrist. The first segment connects to the shoulder, the third one is the elbow and the fifth is the wrist. Make the fourth one slightly larger than the 3rd and 5th to give the model / character's arm a more natural look.

Connect the corresponding vertices in each segment starting from the shoulder one to the wrist using the 'Create Line' tool as shown in the figure. Also create a refernce model / character to see the shape of the arm in a 3d shape in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

Don't forget to save the scene. We will refine the model / character's arm in the next page of this tutorial. |
