In this chapter, we will start modeling the female model's / character's body/torso in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Since you have already gained quite a bit of experience in spline modeling technique, I would explain things with more illustrations and less detailed instructions. Shall we start sculpting her?

Create a new Scene and save it as chapter-12.2-save-01.max . Now lets start by creating the outline profile of our character in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Draw the profile shown to the left inthe 'Front' viewport using the Line tool. |
Now connect the opposing vertices using the 'Create Line' tool from the Modify Panel, when the profile figure is selected and is in the 'Vertex' mode. Don't forget to turn on 3D Snap in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). |

The next step is to refine the newly created connection lines in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Refine vertices at all junction points shown, in the current state of the spline that you are having. Our aim is to draw two vertical lines spanning from the top vertex to the bottom vertex. Since it has to intersect the horizontal lines, we need to refine those horizontal lines with new vertices at the intersection points. After adding the vertices, you can simply create two lines from the top vertex to the bottom vertex passing through all these newly refined vertices. If you observe the figure, you will get a clear picture. |

In the figure shown, look at the spline model / character. You can see that the inner vertices has been pulled out. Now its your turn. Select all those inner vertices (dont select any lying on the perimeter of the profile), and pull them out in the perspective view in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), using the Move Tool. Please don't forget to turn on 'Area Selection' from the Modify panel before you select the vertices.
Now that you have given the profile a 3d shape, let's see how it looks. Create a reference copy, assign a new material with 2-sided property turned on. Don't forget to move the reference copy slightly apart from the profile model / character, as we usually do in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).
