Refining the neck in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson

Our model / character's neck is almost flat now. Let's make it more rounded and real in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). With the vertex mode selected in the Modifier Panel, select the vertices shown in the figures and move them so that the neck takes a better form.

You may need to adjust the position of the adjacent vertices also, so that the lines connecting the vertices remains smooth. Otherwise, bumps will arise in your model / character. Also make the neck vertices (except those vertices that makes a L shaped bent at the corners) smoothed.

If you look carefully, you can see that the front region of the model / character's neck seems very flat. It is because, it lacks a line segment in the front. Refine the vertices and connect line as shown in the figure.

Select those vertices and smooth them.

Now you can see, that a small problem has arised. The triangule formed is causing unwanted bump in the model / character. In the modify panel, in the modifier stack of Line, instead of Vertex, choose Segment. Now click on the segment shown in the figure and press Delete.

After deleting that segment, a five vertex polygon has formed, which will cause a hole in our model / character. To rectify that in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), connect the vertices shown in the figure.

Select those vertices and smooth them. Again abnormal bents will form in the mesh in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Just leave it like that. After completing the modeling, we will apply a modifier on the whole model / character which will relax slight bumps. Hence dont spend too much time on such bumps.

We have almost done. Just move the newly created vertices outward so that the model / character's neck gains a round shape in the front also. Note that moving one vertex can cause unwanted bends on the segment connecting it to the adjacent vertices. Hence you will need to adjust the adjacent vertices too. Always make the lines connecting the vertices as straight as possible. Even if a curve is there, make it as smooth as possible in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).

Shaping the back of the model / character's head in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson
The next task is something you will find quite easy to do. We need to sculpt the back of our model / character's head in a proper shape. Rotate the view so that the back of the head is visible. Now select the vertices that you find, suitable for altering the shape and move them outwards to add more depth to the skull's rear portion. Refer to the figures to get a better idea about how much to pull the vertices. Since there are regions where many segments having lots of vertices come close by, repositioning them can be quite challenging in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Be patient while the adjacent vertices unexpectadly cause bumps in the model / character. Slightly move those vertices too, so that the bumps can be avoided.

Save the scene as Chapter12.1-save-04.max. We will learn how to model the basic eye region in our model / character in the next page.
