Now if you look at the viewports, you will see that our reference figure has developed some polygonal mesh in it. The surface modifier applied on it will build surface in properly closed line mesh. You keep on updating the original mesh in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) and the reference will show you how it will look after applying the surface modifier. Got the technique?
Open the Material Editor in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) and change the color of the Reference Object’s material to a light red, for better visibility in the viewports.
Note: If you want to select the Reference Object, first you need to unselect the original one since it is in the vertex editing mode. Click on the Vertex again in the modify panel to get out from that mode. Now you can click on any other object you want. Moving out of the modify panel (click on create panel) also lets you select other objects.
Now that you have learned the basics, I’ll simply mention where all we need vertices and lines to be created. Follow the same techniques we mentioned earlier. |
Tip: Everytime you need to refine a vertex in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), or create a line, you needn’t click on the buttons in the modify panel. Instead, right click on the object in the viewport and choose Refine or Create Line from the menu that appears. |

Refine the vertices on the model / character's mesh as shown in the figure. The locations to be refined are highlighted using circles. |
|
Now create lines between the vertices as shown in the figure. |
