More
about Lighting in 3D Studio MAX
( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson |
In this lesson, you will
learn more about lighting
in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds
max ). If you don't remember
the basics of lighting,
please refer back to the
basics lessons.
Open the scene 'chap8-room-textured.max'.
(Download
the scene here if
you dont have it). We
will start by adding two
omni
lights into the 3D Studio
MAX ( 3ds max ) scene.
In the Create
panel, within
lights, click
on Omni
and in the top
viewport, click
somewhere within the room
to create the light. Add
one more omni in the top
viewport, near the first
one. Position, the lights,
using the move tool to
the approximate positions
shown in the figure.
Also align the lights
in the Front
and Left
viewports in 3D Studio
MAX ( 3ds max ), as shown
in the figures below.

We
positioned the lights without
using the Place Highlight

tool in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max
) because the tool might cause
the lights to get outside the
room in order to give the required
highlight. When the lights are
positioned outside the wall and
we turn the shadows On, it will
cause the walls to cast shadows,
that might turn the whole render
black. You can use the highlight
tool in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max
) if you are quite comfortable
with it, but make sure that the
lights remain inside the room
boundaries. |

| Creating
a camera in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds
max ) - Tutorial / Lesson |
While zooming and rotating
the perspective view in 3D Studio
MAX ( 3ds max ), you might have
noticed that it is quite difficult
to get a proper view without
getting hindered by the walls.
The reason is that the perspective
view has a long focal length
lens. Since we cannot adjust
the perspective view parameters
much, let us add a camera to
the scene.
Create a Free Camera
in the Front viewport
of the 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max
) scene. Click within the perspective
view and press C
on the keyboard. This will switch
the viewport to camera view
in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).
Use the zoom tool to get a good
view through the camera. In
the modify panel, change the
camera's stock lens
to 20mm by
clicking on the respective button.
In the camera view, if you rotate
and zoom now, you will see the
difference. The 3D Studio MAX
( 3ds max ) camera has turned
more wide angled and is now
more comfortable to work with
within the room.

| Modifying
the Light in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds
max ) - Tutorial / Lesson |
Let us experiment a bit
with our lights in 3D
Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).
Make sure that you get
a good view of the room
through the camera, since
we will have to render
the scene very frequently
and see the effects of
lighting.
With one of the lights
selected in the scene,
go to the modify panel
in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds
max ), and change the
light's colour to a light
orangish yellow, as shown
in the figure. Render
the scene. Change the
color of the other light
too.
