Creating the vase in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson

In this page, we are going to make a vase. We will first draw the outline of the vase, using the line tool. Then we apply the Lathe modifier to revolve the outline so that we get the 3-D vase. Create the vase in the same scene in which you created the table. Pan the viewports, so that you will have space to work with your vase.

From the create panel in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) , inside shapes, you select the Line tool. Now draw the outline of the Vase, as shown in the figures given below. The placement of the vertices need not be exact. Draw the shape in the front viewport, and preferably start from the top left corner of the outline. At those places where you need a curved line, click and hold the mouse down, while defining the vertex, and move the mouse a bit to make the line curved. At those points where you need a sharp corner, simply click the mouse and release. Proceed by creating points till you reach the end of the outline at the base. You don't have to close the spline. When you reach the bottom of the outline at the last vertex, simply, right click the mouse to terminate the line tool. If the last point appears to be misplaced, simply press Backspace to delete it.

The placement of the points in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ), if seems inaccurate to you, apply the edit spline modifier on the line and change the vertices's position as you wish. This process has been elaborately explained in the previous page.

Using the Lathe tool in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) - Tutorial / Lesson

We have defined the outline. Now what? We need to revolve the outline so that the contour gets converted to the 3-D vase. Keeping the outline selected, choose the Lathe tool from the Modifier List in the Modify panel of 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). You will notice that a 3-D object has been formed in the viewport. But you will see that, this vase does we resemble our outline. You will see three buttons in the parameters of the Lathe tool within the modify panel, under the category Align. Click on the button Min. This should fix the problem and make the vase look exactly the way we wanted it to.

But still a problem remains. Some regions of the vase looks awkward in the viewports. Any object that has been created using the Lathe tool needs a two sided material to be applied to it. Open, the Material editor of 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) and assign a new material to the vase. Inside, the materials parameters, check the 2-sided checkbox. This makes the material two sided, and now, the vase should look perfect.

The Lathe tool in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) is a very useful tool for modelling objects that can be revolved from an outline.

Don't forget to position the vase, so that it rests on top of the table. If the size of the vase that you created is too large or too small, use the Scale tool in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) to resize it.
