Basic animation

We are going to make the ball bounce on the floor using keyframe animation using 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) in this tutorial page. If you don't have the scene that we created in the previous pages with you, you can download it here (chap4-ball-scene.max')

Now things are going to be really simple. Click on the Set Key button in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) to toggle Set Key mode ON. The button will be depressed and turns red. The whole time display turns red too. This notifies that now we are in the animation mode in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Make sure that the Time Slider is at the far left corner and reads 0/50 on it. If not, drag it to the left extreme. Now we are going to set the key fixing the position of the ball at the zeroth frame. Shall we? Make sure that the ball is above the floor at the 'going to fall' position and make it selected in the viewport in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). Now click on the Set Keys 3d max keyframe set key button (not the Set Key used to toggle, but the one having key symbol on top of it). This will set the key for the ball at the current frame. The position of the ball is now fixed. Now we need to define the position of the ball at the 25th frame (touching the floor) and also at the 50th frame (again above ground but on the other side).

Just drag the Time Slider in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) to 25th frame (reading 25/50), and move the ball down touching the floor and at the same time a bit towards the left. (since it should move forward during the fall). Now when you are sure about the position at 25th frame, press Set Keys 3d max set key button with the ball still selected in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). This sets the keyframe for 25th frame.

Now move the Time Slider to 50th frame, ball above the floor to the left most end and click Set Keys 3d max set key button again to set key.

Refer to the figures given, for proper placement of the ball in the 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) scene at each keyframe position.

Please dont get perplexed with the positioning of the ball. Take your own time to position it accurately. Only after you press the Set Keys button, it gets keyframed in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ). After you make a keyframe, in the Time bar you will see a small icon representing the keyframe. Notice it in the 0th, 25th and 50th frame now. You can say where all keyframes are set for the currently selected object in the scene, by looking at this icon in the Time bar. If you feel that the position you set for the ball is not correct for a frame, simply move the Time slider to that frame, move the ball to the correct position and click Set Keys 3d studio max tutorial set key again. This overwrites the keyframe you set before.

I would advise you to look at all the four viewports in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ) for placing the ball properly. The front view can be used to determine if the ball has touched on the floor. In order to move the ball down, drag it down along the Z axis using the Move Tool. To move it forward, use the X axis. If you need any assistance in the Move Tool refer back to Transformations discussed in Chapter 1 of the Basic lessons.

Move the Time Slider from left to right along the whole time bar or click the play button in the animation playback controls. You will see that 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ) has filled up the intermediate frames so that three three keyframes you've set is now changed into a smooth animation. But the animation seems more like a ball landing down and taking off, than a touch down and bounce back. 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ) 's interpolation may need to be tuned sometimes or we get results like this. We do the fine tuning to our animation, after specifying the keyframes using the Track View, which we will discuss about in the next page
