| Editing
the Material Properties in 3D Studio
MAX ( 3DS MAX ) - Tutorial / Lesson |
|
We
did assign the
Material to our
teapot in 3D Studio
MAX ( 3ds max
). But it assumed
only the grey
colour instead
of the texture
in the viewport.
Why? Inorder to
understand that
we need to know
how texturing
is done in 3D
Studio MAX ( 3DS
MAX ). Every Material
has got several
base properties
associated with
it. The first
among those is
the Type. Have
a look at the
figure shown below |
|
|
The arrow pointed to
by the 4. Click
to Roll & Unroll
is a minus
or plus sign depending
on whether the parameters
are hidden or shown.
Clicking on the - symbol
in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds
max ) rolls up the sublist
so that it will be hidden.
The - changes to + symbol.
Clicking on the + unrolls
the list. Got it? So
if any parameter is
not present in your
Material Editor, its
probable that it is
rolled up. Try unrolling
the lists to see the
hidden properties. If
your screen resolution
is low, you will need
to click drag on any
empty space inside the
Material Editor to pan
it upwards and downwards
to see more of it. This
is applicable for several
windows in 3D Studio
MAX ( 3DS MAX ).

The
1.Material Type in the figure
specifies the type of
the Material that we are
editing in the Material
Editor in 3D Studio MAX
( 3ds max ). Our material
'Reflection_Chromic' is
of type Anisotropic. Anisotropic
can be used to apply on
objects that have sharp
reflecting properties
like glass, water etc.
It reflects non-symmetrically
from different angles.
We will discuss other
Material types in 3D Studio
MAX ( 3ds max ) as we
go furthur in this tutorial.
Just clicking on the Anisotropic
brings down a
list from which you can
choose another Material
type. Don't do it now.
We will look into those
later. Moving down, we
see Ambient, Diffuse,
Specular etc. Ambient
refers to the shadowed
regions of an object.
If you look at the sphere
slots we can see dark
areas in it caused by
lighting. The colour of
that dark regions is specified
in the Ambient parameter.
Diffuse refers to the
overall colour or map
of the Material in 3D
Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).
Here it is grey. That
is the reason why our
teapot now appears in
grey colour in the viewport.
Click on the Big rectangle
with dark grey colour
in it, just to the right
of the text 'Diffuse'.
(not the arrow pointing
2. Assign map. It has
another purpose). It brings
up a colour chooser. You
can choose any colour
you need in 3D Studio
MAX ( 3ds max ). |
|
The
color chooser's
top portion is shown
here. There are
two columns 'Hue'
and 'Whiteness'.
Click inside the
Hue box (large one)
at around the top
left corner to choose
the Red Hue. Now
we need to decrease
the whiteness of
the hue to make
the red darker.
Click on the top
region of the Whiteness
box (thin long one)
pointed in the figure
with the mouse pointer
in 3D Studio MAX
( 3ds max ). Now
the color should
be dark red. Right? |
|
|
|
If you would like, please feel
free to experiment with the
color chooser to get familiar
with how you can get the color
you need in 3D Studio MAX (
3ds max ). Finally set back
the color to dark Red and close
the color chooser by clicking
'Close'.
Now our Diffuse parameter has
got Red color in it. Also the
color gets reflected in the
sphere slot in the Material
Editor in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds
max ). But you might ask why
the color is not prominent.
It is because a Reflection map
has been assigned to the material
already. We will see that soon.
Noticed the small square button
to the right of the Diffuse
field pointed to by the arrow
in our top figure (2.
Assign Map). It overrides
the Diffuse color with a Map
in 3D Studio MAX ( 3ds max ).
A map has already been applied
to the Reflection parameter
to our material when we imported
it from Material Library. That
map makes the effect of our
reddish colored Diffuse subtle.
You might complain that you
can't see any Reflection parameter.
Don't worry. In addition to
the Diffuse, Specular, Ambient
we have a large no: of parameters.
They are all present in the
Maps rollout
at the bottom region of the
Material Editor. For our convenience,
in 3D Studio MAX ( 3DS MAX ),
the common 3 parameters are
given at the top . Ok?
We won't assign any Maps to
the Diffuse property right now.
But don't forget that clicking
on the button to the right of
the Diffuse, Specular, Ambient
etc properties lets us assign
maps to it. Now lets proceed
to
the next page of this tutorial
